With over twenty years as a wood sculptor and furniture maker, I bring a unique vision to the creation of shoji lamps. I love the harmony, design elements and geometry of the shoji lamp. My shoji lamps celebrate the tension between the delicacy of paper and the strength of wood. I find joy in working with the different characteristics of wood: texture, color, grain, pattern and density. I do not use any stains or dyes on the wood, so as to highlight the natural color and figure of the species of wood. Each lamp is finished with three hand rubbed coats of a special mixture of tung, linseed, and Danish oils. I draw inspiration from classical Japanese joinery and western craftsmanship. The pairing of particular woods and papers accentuates the aesthetic qualities of each element. I view my work as creating boxes of light. |
